About the place

The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist stands in the town centre on Constantin Brâncoveanu Street. It was built between 1800 and 1804 by the high treasurer Ion Urșanu, steward of the Horezu district, together with Constantin Covrea and his wife Stanca. The murals were painted in 1807 by Dinu and Manole of Craiova.

After 1946, when the town's new church opened, the old one was neglected and used only once a year, on its feast day. It became a parish church again in 1992, and the roof and paintings were repaired in 1995-1996. A stone cross of 1807 in the churchyard is also listed.

Good to know

  • The main feast day is 21 November.
  • The statues of Constantin Brâncoveanu and I. G. Duca stand next to the church.
  • The paintings are easiest to see during services; at other times the church may be locked.
