About the place
The complex is on Carol I Street, north of the centre. Several churches stood on this site: the first probably in the late 14th century; one was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1737 and another burned in 1847. Today's cathedral was built between 1850 and 1856 by Bishop Calinic of Cernica, with support from Prince Barbu Știrbei, and was painted by Gheorghe Tattarescu in 1854–1855, in a realist, Renaissance-inspired style. The iconostasis is carved and gilded lime wood.
The precinct also holds the chapel of St Gregory the Theologian of 1751, with its original architecture and painting, the infirmary church of 1745–1746, the bell tower, the bishop's palace and the ruins of the old printing house. All belong to the ensemble listed as a monument of national value.
