About the place

The park is on the western edge of the centre, next to the Sofianu hotel and the Anton Pann Memorial House. 'Deșteaptă-te, române!' was sung here for the first time on 29 July 1848, at the blessing of the revolution's banners; the song became Romania's national anthem after 1989. From 1850 Prince Barbu Știrbei turned the riverside wood (zăvoi) into a public park.

At the entrance stands the Barbu Știrbei monument, made in 1920 by the sculptor Constantin Mihăilescu, restored and officially unveiled on 30 June 2026. The Știrbei Fountain of 1853, also a listed monument, is here too. The park has paths, a small lake, fountains, playgrounds and a skate park. In 2025 several old trees were felled because of a disease, and replanting was announced.
