It is a listed monument of national value and part of the UNESCO site Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia.
About the place
The fort was built in 137–138 AD under Emperor Hadrian on the Roman road through the Olt gorge and belonged to the Limes Alutanus defence line. It was in use until the first half of the 3rd century, when an Olt flood badly damaged it.
The Călimănești town hall restored the fort with recovery-plan (PNRR) funding under a contract signed in 2022. The works corrected a 1980s reconstruction and uncovered stretches of the Roman roads inside, which are part of the visitor route. The new gate, with a reflective façade, drew criticism in the press in August 2026.
