About the place
Ostrov island lies in the reservoir of the Călimănești hydro plant, right in the centre of the resort, and is linked to the bank by a bridge. The church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built by Prince Neagoe Basarab and Princess Despina and is dated 1520–1521. It is a listed monument (VL-II-m-A-09698).
The church was painted between 1752 and 1760. The icon of the Virgin was restored in 1791 by Ioan Zugravul. Three other old icons from here are now in the National Museum of Art of Romania.
