About the place

The Holy Trinity church was built between 1387 and 1391 by Mircea the Elder and consecrated in 1388. Its stone and brick façades, with rosettes and bands, follow the Serbian Morava school, and the interior was painted in 1390–1391. Neagoe Basarab had the painting renewed in the early 16th century and built the fountain that bears his name; Constantin Brâncoveanu added the porch in the early 18th century.

Mircea the Elder died in 1418 and is buried here; the nun Teofana, mother of Michael the Brave, is also buried in the church. In December 2025 archaeologists reopened the tomb and confirmed that the stone sarcophagus is the original. Across the road stands the infirmary church (Bolnița), painted in 1542–1543. The ensemble is a listed monument (VL-II-a-A-09697).
